Peppermint Candy Hat

This was a stash buster for some completely stretchless cotton yarn - after knitting up from the rolled brim and duplicate stitching on the swirl, we realized it fell off J's head instantly - two shallow and a bit big.  I picked up inside the roll brim with smaller needles and knit the ribbing down to make a deeper hat and stretchier - I like how it turned out!

Felicity in Charcoal

 

This is probably the warmest hat I've ever made or had.  Charcoal wool alpaca from Rowan and wool Latte yum (Ravelry notes here)

 

I knew I didn't have enough brown for a whole hat and wanted the latte to be the lower border (don't even ask why, I have no idea) so I knit this from the top down, just reversing the m1 and k2tog directions.  Not only did I use up the Rowan, but that pom pom is the absolute last of the Latte too.

Lookie!  It goes with my warm warm cowl. Ready for snow.

Summer Flower Hat

 Well, there's been so much making here, and so much of it is hush hush, but I found these photos from the summer that somehow escaped posting but can elude me no longer.  This was a sweet bucket hat for a friend of ours who requested purple and blue.  The fabric is African hand tie dyed cloth, a kind of thick brocade so I didn't interface it. 

 Aside from the petal brim, it really just kind of needed ... something.  A gigantic flower, perhaps?

Now that I'm knitting hats to warm heads it is fun to look back at hats just meant to keep the sun off.

Summer Vacation!

The only crafting going on has been car and campsite knitting - more on that when I get a few photos taken. Otherwise, it was swimming, hiking, and appreciating the toddler pace and perspective. Like the huge toadstool above. An slew of fairies could have camped here.

Buckets o' Bucket Hats

I love these fabrics - it turned out well although this was one of my first ones and it is pretty deep in the crown - I shortened the pattern on subsequent hats.


This one has a shorter crown and petal brim. Silly cutie beneath optional.

Another Last Minute Knitted Gift - Family Ribbed Hat

After only two weeks, two projects done done done. Either I've just suddenly got lots of time on my hands or suddenly got really motivated by my new good book. My gauge was much smaller on this than the pattern called for, but I just did the math and figured with a hat, who would care? I love how it turned out - very springy, and very very warm. I've actually been wearing it around the house instead of turning up the thermostat and finding it makes me just as comfortable.

Voila! Mr. Sycamore was busy with bath time so here is *ahem - "self portrait with hat." See? Comfortably sproingy. I saved some of the pink to accent some fingerless gloves in the queue. Have no idea how long my motivation will last, but there are some very pretty ones in this book so maybe I will just keep going.

Update: this is absolutely the most comfortable hat I've ever had. The stretchiness means it covers my ponytail without squishing, perfect perfect perfect. Thank you Joelle!

Little Blue Mammoth Hat

Because that is supposed to be a mammoth, not because of the size of the head, although we are a family of big-headed toddlers. Heads like lolipops on their teeny little bodies, oh yes.

Two - TWO - more skeins of this yummy yummy llama wool. Not quite enough for a warm shawl (unless it was lacy and on tremendously large needles). Not enough for a sweater - maybe a warm vest? With stripes? This wool is clearly too warm for my hot-blooded babies, it was meant for me! But what?!?

Little Pink Hat

This fabulous llama wool was gifted to me by a friend - the llama is now gone, the yarn lives on. It feels delicious - warm, fuzzy, with lots of body. When I showed her the hat I was making for J, she promptly requested one for her daughter and here it is. I remembered to take a shot before giving it to her, but only one, so this is it. I made up the pattern in the car based on the purple hat, since all I had were needles and yarn and no pattern to use ... it came out better than expected! I love projects where you are really just knitting to enjoy yourself and keep your hands occupied, but then the outcome turns out great. MUCH better than those projects where you are kntting fast and furiously for the prize and for one reason or another it doesn't come together the way you envisioned.

I guess I'm waaay past the kids clothing week challenge end, but here is an addition, finished in the front passenger seat of the car on the way to West Virginia camping.

Sweet Newborn Sprout

This is some of the softest merino I've ever felt. The babe is due in February, so can't have too many warm hats. I added the sprout with some natural dyed stash yarn. Makes me smile, seeing something that was in my head come right out the way I envisioned. Almost makes up for all the projects that get torn out 3 times then eventually abandoned!


I made up an extra with the rest of the skein, which will be in my etsy shop this week, depending on naps.
